"Keep calm and refill your lantern."
I was gonna make this into a poll at first, but I thought it would be easier to reply/discuss in journal form!
I'm trying to become more active on dA again, getting the hang of commenting and browsing for new people regularly after years of idleness. I used to be pretty active during my first 5 or so years here, then life happened and I somehow lost the energy to participate online, which has actually bothered me for ages. Making friends and/or gaining an audience tends to be all about giving and receiving, after all - if you're friendly and generous and
sincere (never fake interest in someone's work, it's the most hurtful thing you could do to an artist), people will usually take notice and be friendly in return. I used to comment rather actively ages ago but the culture around social media has evolved during the 16 years of deviantART and lots of people are no longer comfortable leaving comments, as leaving faves/likes is easier and tends to feel less intrusive/personal. Fave-and-run is a well-known type of behaviour on this site and some people really don't like it. I know I'm guilty of doing this as I often feel like leaving comments will make people uncomfortable even though we're all here to be noticed.
So now I'm asking you guys: when you're looking for new people to watch, where do you usually go? Do you check the front page for new deviations in your favourite categories, do you check the new deviants page, join groups, browse the forums, go to the chatrooms or something else? Personally I'm in a lot of groups but I'm also trying to keep an eye out for new works in the traditional art/fan art categories and I've already found a lot of talented people to follow. So what's your way of making dA a home? How do discover cool new artists and inspiration here?
